Pamplin Media Group - Dope or nope? Banksyland opens in Portland

Banksyland is open now in Portland. The "unauthorized" show of authentic Banksy arts works has its first stop in Portland before touring widely in the U.S. in two-week stints.

The show combines photos of Banksy stencil paintings on walls printed on vinyl and mounted on canvas, as well as photos of sculptures, small models of sculptures, authentic numbered prints, white-on-black slogan canvases and a silent video piece made up of sayings. British artist Banksy became famous for guarding his identity while spreading his subversive stencil art around the UK. As his collectible value has risen, Banksy has pranked the art world to variable effect.

In 2018, an early print of Girl With Balloon sold for around $1.3 million, but as the gavel fell, was partially shredded in the frame, as a stunt. He renamed it Love is in the Bin and the new owner resold it last October for $21 million.

Works on show in Portland's Factor building include prints of "Balloon Girl," the girls with the heart-shaped red balloon; "Rage, the Flower Thrower," printed on paper and recreated as a golden plastic sculpture; and "Kissing Coppers." There are photos and paintings from "Dismaland," one of his many pokes at Disneyland and theme parks, and "Walled Off Hotel," an amusingly-decorated hotel in Bethlehem beside a security wall. Some of the work is stencils on authentic-looking cardboard. Some are photos, such as the classical bust in a swirl of tear gas made from white polyester stuffing.

The work is on show in an east side warehouse-to-office conversion, still awaiting tenant improvements. It is the latest in a series of "immersive" art shows, from van Gogh to Frida Kahlo, with timed tickets and high prices.

"Banksyland" organizer Elle Miller said the show is unauthorized by the artist. It is organized by her nonprofit One Thousand Ways. Miller says she used to live in Portland as was disturbed at arts funding being cut in Portland Public Schools.

"Portland doesn't always get to see stuff like this," Miller said. "We wanted to share his work with the people, so we organized a not-for-profit organization and are creating a grant to fund arts education and artists."

Banksy is not represented by any other gallery or institution. Banksy's own organization, Pest Control, lists all the unofficial Banksy shows, but has not been updated for this one. A D V E R T I S I N G | Continue reading below

"I see a new exhibition of Banksy work has just opened, is it authorized? Nope. Banksy has NOTHING to do with any of the current or recent exhibitions and they are nothing like a genuine Banksy show. They might be crap so please don't come to us for a refund."

He forbids commercial reuse of his images, according to the website.

"Saying 'Banksy wrote copyright is for losers in his book' doesn't give you free rein to misrepresent the artist and commit fraud. We checked."

"Banksyland," through May 8, Factor Building, 226 S.E. Madison St.; $29-$59. Banksyland
