Work on the sidewalks and city water supply lines near the corner of Calhoun Street and Washington Street has begun.

City Inspector David Nelson said this is the first step in work to replace the city's cast iron water supply lines with PVC pipe.

Water Office Supervisor Mandy Marchan said, "This is finishing up work on the first phase before we begin the second phase.

Marchan said all the work will take an estimated 12 to 18 months to finish.

During their February meeting, the Magnolia City Council voted to accept the bid of RBIS LLC, a Texarkana-based contracting firm, to replace the city's aged water supply lines.

RBIS worked during the first phase of replacing the water mains.

The cost of the second phase is estimated to be $2,145,625 and will be covered by funds the city received from the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act.
