A sense of comfort and calmness run through the walls of the former Henderson House in Duncan as a variety of art from its former owner is displayed in the new offices space. Adrianne Arrington, with Real Estate Experts, recently discovered the previous owner of the home was known to create many works of art in her lifetime and wanted to pay homage to her.

Through the purchase of a new office space, a local Realtor discovered there was more to the former home than meets the eye and now a variety of art from a past artist hangs at the home on 8th Street in Duncan.

Adrianne Arrington, with Real Estate Experts, recently discovered the previous owner of the home was known to create many works of art in her lifetime and wanted to pay homage her. Arrington wanted to hear more of her story, as well as purchase some of the art.

Real Estate Experts, formally known as the The Henderson House, has since inherited a plethora of artwork from its former owners from the homeowners’ relatives.

Arrington said previous owners, Guy O. Henderson, Sr. and Truby E. Henderson had occupied the home for many years but when she bought the house, it had sat vacant for a while.

The house, owned by the city, has seen a few owners since, such as Women’s Haven.

Arrington said as much as she tried to fight it, she knew she had to buy this house.

“Honestly, God told me to buy it,” she said.

After they moved into the building, Arrington said they began cleaning it up and restoring parts the house when she received a visit from the granddaughters of The Hendersons.

Arrington said the house still occupies the floor plans for the original design, built by The Hendersons.

She said the couple’s granddaughters shared the story of the house and their grandparents with her, as well as how Truby Henderson was an artist.

According to Arrington, while Guy Henderson got up, put on a suit everyday and walked downtown to do business, Truby Henderson would stay at home, as an artist, and work on pottery and art.

Arrington said she would love to display the art back in the house if they were willing to sell any of it.

Becky Craig and Kathleen Barker said their family is honored to donate the paintings back to their grandparents’ home.

(“We’re) thrilled to donate several outstanding paintings as a way of honoring (our) grandmother, Truby E Henderson,” Craig said.

Given the opportunity to bring the paintings back, those who enter the home will once again have a chance to view art created by Truby Henderson.

“The paintings represent the essence of her artistic ability, which began after the age of 50 and continued well into her 80s,” Craig said. “The paintings are once again displayed in the Henderson home as a reminder of Truby’s goodness, kindness and deep faith.”

According to Arrington, Truby Henderson had a garage apartment in the back where her washroom was and her studio was upstairs.

“No one was really allowed to go up there,” she said. “That was her war room, her art studio — that was her space.”

Arrington wanted to bring back a way for people to remember who The Hendersons were.

Arrington said they have spent some time rehabilitating the home back to the original look, from door knobs to the floors.

She said through the design process, they had the house blessed and behind many of the doors and cabinets there are scriptures written within and the outside entryway is lined with bricks leftover from the original fireplace.

According to Arrington, those who have spent time inside the home feel a peace.

“When I bought this, God told me it was a haven,” she said. “It has been Women’s Haven and it’s still a haven.”

The home has been a place for many to gather, from a widows’ ministry to youth small group meetings and yoga classes outside.

Arrington said through the widows’ ministry, they offer walkers, furniture and more to those who need it.

Currently, Arrington has a massage therapist who rents a space at the house.

Arrington said she’s also opened up additional office space for people who need a space for a month or so.

She said part of buying the house was because she wanted to be able to help people out.

“It’s been a tremendous space for me,” she said.

Around 11 paintings now hang in the house.
