Stockport County fans trolled Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham by flying a banner over their play-off semi-final against Grimsby Town.

Wrexham are involved in the National League play-offs after missing out on the title by a six points to Stockport. And Hatters fans took the chance to rub their noses in it before Saturday's match at the Racecourse Ground.

As the teams warmed up ahead of the crunch clash, the BT Sport cameras panned overhead to a small plane trailing a banner behind it. "SCFC champions cheers thank you evf x," read the message, referencing Stockport's status as champions and their manager Dave Challinor's catchphrase.

The expert piece of trolling went down a storm on social media, as one person wrote: "Hahahaha love it." Someone else said: "Go on the lads, f***ing brilliant, can't believe some of our fans are moaning about it #cheersthankyou."

A third person commented: "After @Wrexham_AFC lost the league to @StockportCounty they chose the fly this over the Semi Final. Absolute s***housery." While another user chimed said: "Love the plane flying above Wrexham’s Racecourse ground. Stockport County Champions."

"To the Stockport fan who just flew the plane over the racecourse ground, you’re unreal hahahahaha utm," came another reply. "Top s***housery from Stockport," agreed someone else.

Stockport won promotion automatically from the National League after finishing ahead of Wrexham by six points. The Welsh side still had a chance of going up as champions on the final day but needed results to go their way.

The Dragons needed to beat Dagenham & Redbridge and hope that Stockport lost to Halifax to go up as champions. But as it turned out, Wrexham lost 3-0 to the Daggers and the Hatters beat Halifax 2-0 to confirm their place in League Two next season.

Ryan Reynolds suffered more heartbreak last week as Wrexham lost the FA Trophy to Bromley at Wembley. Michael Cheek scored the only goal of the game as the London side prevailed in front of a crowd that included Reynolds, Will Ferrell and David Beckham.
